So, what exactly is Block Paving?
Block paving, or also referred to as brick paving is arguably the most popular product to be utilised for the construction of driveways, pathways, patios and pavements. The ease of the installation, unlike other more recent products on the market, can be laid in weather conditions that its rival alternatives simply can’t. The ease of repairing any remedial issues are more forgiving and therefore less time-consuming and practical.
The depth of excavation must ensure the final finish of the block works falls always below the 150mm damp-proof course, anything less than that will cause internal water ingress issues. ACO drains are another alternative when the 150mm level, for one reason or another, (gas mains, services etc) is not possible, and will ensure the water is safely directed away and into the correct channels.
Once allowing for the kerb trims, edge restraints and required foundations, any additional drainage requirements must then be fitted, followed by the correct sub-base, screeding course.
Block Paving can be almost limitless within its design options, and can be tailored to the clients exact needs and desires. A multitude of colours and designs can be achieved once the correct excavation has been completed, and strengthened with the classic herringbone interlocking pattern at either 45 or 90 degrees, dependent of the project.
Finally the jointing is applied using kiln-dried sand over the surface of the newly laid blocks and swept into the joints whilst compacting using vibrating compacting plate, or Whacker, as it’s known within the trade. Further sand is added over the course of the following weeks as the blocks and sand settles.
With new blocks, it’s generally advised that a minimum of 8-10 weeks has passed before any sealants can be applied, and only when the blocks have naturally released their efflorescence.
