Listed Building Works

How can LORD Roofing & Grounds Works assist with your Listed Building?

For those homeowners that currently reside within a Listed Building, you will be only too aware of the beauty, heritage and craftsmanship that these buildings offer, if they have been well maintained over the years. The original features these Listed Buildings are historic symbols British artistry. The original wooden beams, stone mullion windows, large open fireplaces and beautifully constructed roofs; ranging from stone slate, natural slate, plain and peg tiles to clay pantiles is like owning a piece of British living history. And for most, it doesn’t get anymore satisfying than that. The more rural Listed Buildings are typically surrounded by tranquil sweeping countryside with a real feel of living in a different era, within a building that has stood the test of time.

Listed Buildings are always a very sound investment, if they are afforded the love and due care and attention they most certainly deserve. Then value will usually only ever appreciate as the years roll by, but maintaining them under the strict National Heritage and Conservation laws, and after approval; from Listed Building Consent ,can become costly. This is due to the fact, depending on the Grade of Listing, repairs or changes are required to be carried out using the same original materials, and by accredited and specialist tradesman.

Whether that be traditional specialist masonry work, requiring pick and re-point of the lime mortar using the old-style scutch chisel between the exterior stone wall joints, or replacing/repairing the original sash or mullion windows, to replacing the original roof with stone slate; it doesn’t come cheap. As I’m sure those privileged enough to own a Listed Building are only to aware. It’s also a criminal offence to carry out work on a Listed Building with Listed Building Consent.

Lord Roofing has helped us to preserve the quality of our home over the years. Living in a listed building has been made easier by the services offered by the Lord Roofing team.

So, what is a Listed Building?

By definition, a ‘Listed Building’ is a building, object or structure that has been judged to be of national importance in terms of architectural or historic interest, and included on a special register, called the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. These are complied by the Department for Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS), under the provisions of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act of 1990. The list includes a wide variety of structures, from castles, cathedrals, to milestones and even village pumps.

Listed Buildings are listed in their entirety, meaning both the interior and exterior of the building are fully protected. In addition to that, any object or structure fixed to the building or within the curtilage are also protected.

Listed Buildings are listed to help protect the physical evidence of our past, including buildings, which are valued and protected as a central part of our cultural heritage and sense of identity. Historic buildings also add to the quality of our lives, as they are an important aspect of the character and appearance of our towns, villages and countryside’s.
